      As you can tell from the top of the page, my name is Larry Shultz. Ive been involved with computer graphics since the mid 1980's. Initially I learned computer graphics strictly from a programming standpoint. Later I figured out that I also had an artistic ability and quickly took to creating 2D and 3D artwork on the Amiga when it was first released. I spent more and more time with 3D artwork, fascinated with movie f/x and  animation in general. At the time I was really getting into computer animation I was working as a Laser Technician at Sandia National Laboratories. During that time I became more and more involved with the Video Toaster through a friend of mine, Brad Carvey (As a side note Brads brother is Dana Carvey and the Garth character in Waynes World is based on Brad) who is the inventor of the Toaster. I began using Lightwave 3D in its early days.
     Over the course of time my fascination with CGI went from a hobby to my full time career instead of Laser Electro-Optics. In the early 1990's I help set up a CGI facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico called Impact Photo Images. Our goal was to do photo restoration on the computer but instead ended up doing computer graphics and animation for local and regional TV. In those days we single frame recorded out of the Video Toaster directly to a massive 3/4" VTR. It sounded like an unbalanced washing machine and renders would hammer away on that deck for hours. It was really slow and tedious. I remember rendering a spot that took over a week that would have taken minutes now. We had to figure out some very creative ways to speed up rendering. We learned to render passes and comp them later. There wasn't a lot  of expertise around in those days so we had to figure much of it out on our own. I setup the whole facility and figured out how to network the machines. I also did most of the animation and trained 3 others to help.
     Next, I went on to form my own company with two other partners. It was called The Animation Factory and we did quite well. We had lots of big clients and we were hated by some of the larger post houses. At that time I started to have a keen interest in character modeling and animation. This seemed to be an area where our competitors were weak. When I left Impact Photo, everyone who I had trained decided to leave with me to form this new company. The old clients we had decided to move with us as well. Again, the company   did very well and we started getting work from larger clients. Using lightwave early on gave us a huge edge over our competition, who typically produced work that looked very plastic like. Even in those days Lightwaves renderer was top notch.
     During this time I was interested in furthering my skills and was interested in the video game business. I applied for an engineering position at a company called American Laser Games. During the interview I explained that I was also very capable as a 3D modeler and animator. My interviewer looked a bit dubious until I pulled out a demo reel. Apparently I was the only person who actually had brought one to an interview. After viewing the reel, he asked me what I REALLY wanted to do and I said, "Graphics". It was exciting to see his reaction while watching my reel because he was very familiar with several of the TV commercials I had done. He took me immediatly to the president of the company and introduced me as the man who had done several of his favorite TV commercials. Needless to say I was hired on the spot. At ALG I worked on several home titles and arcade titles. I eventually became lead artist for the company.    
      In January of 2000, I moved out to L.A. to work for a company called Netter Digital. I worked there as a 3D modeler, animator and TD. Ive also worked for Foundation Imaging as a 3D character modeler, texturer and rigger. While at Foundation I helped to get their Institute up and running and was the first teacher there. I was also curriculum coordinator. Currently I am working for Amalgamated Pixels in West Lake Village again, as a 3D modeler and animator.
     During my career Ive worked on projects such as Max Steel and Dan Dare. Both are all CGI TV series. One in the US and the other in the UK. Ive worked on 3 films: Crawlers, Tall Tales and Scorchers. Ive done work for Discovery Channel (Living Fossils). I also spent 2 years as a contractor with Sony Development in Burbank working as a 3D modeler and animator for a location based project in San Francisco in their Metreon Center. During the 2 yrs on that project I had the honor of working with Jean "Moebius" Giraud.
     I consider myself to be a good all around 3D artist. I am quite familiar with 3D modeling and texturing, especially organic things. I know a good bit about lighting and animating, especially characters. I am also very good at character rigging. Ive worked with particle systems and expressions. I consider my problem solving abilities to be one of my strong points. I never turn down work and I always know how to get things done. Every job is a challenge that has problems to be solved.
