This was a difficult shot to
pull off for several reasons. It had to be FINISHED in less then two weeks. I had only the
background plate to use as reference. I built a 3D model of the actor and added bones, Ik
and expressions to make the rig work. I had to match the location of the head, knees,
elbows, feet, etc. Next I duplicated the actors movements frame by frame as he twisted and
struggled. I used lightwaves particle system to create 11 layers of bugs. Each layer consisted of a clip map layer, bump displacement layer and a color layer that were UV mapped onto the character. I used the a checkerboard texture to help with the match moving and to adjust my UVs for the bug textures. The bump displacement was very important to make the bugs look 3D as they crawled over the edges of the character. |

These are elements from an
Stereoscopic IMAX film called Tall Tales. I had to model, texture, light and animate a
realistic bullfrog that was later comped into some background plates. A special camera rig
was create in lightwave to render a right and left eye view of each scene. I had to
animate the bullfrog jumping into frame, breathing, eyeblinks, subtle movements and
then his tongue shooting out at a firefly. About 30 treefrogs were in one scene where they would drop out of a pond that was being sucked up into a tornado. They fell onto a ledge where they held on trying to keep from being sucked up back into the tornado. Some of them had to crawl down the stage in front of the audience, others would leap into the audience and 3 would fly in and hover in mid air struggling to stay away from the tornado. |
